Most window treatments start with a simple blind or shade. This covers the window itself and can be used to block the light or to provide privacy. Some manufacturers even sell windows with shades or blinds in between the panels of glass. Drapes or curtains are then added above the blinds or shade. These are made from fabric and can range from simple, light-weight cotton to exotic brocade, even silk or satin. An ornamental valance, generally covered with the same fabric as the drapes, goes across the top of the window and can be used to block any curtain rods. Or choose a swag, a piece of the drapery or curtain that is curved or drooped over the top of the window.
