When advertising companies need copy for an ad or client, they often hire writers if they do not have writers on staff. If someone wants to write their autobiography, they may hire a writer to write it for them and the writer may or may not receive writing credit. Software companies often need technical writers to write their software manuals or other documents. Many writers write on a contract basis which means they may write material for a company for a set length of time. Writers may be hired to only write for one or more projects. There are freelance writers, contract freelance writers, and staff writers, among other kinds of writers.
