Acoustical Contractors Terms to Know

Acoustical contractors work to decrease the sound level of a room. Specialized drywall, tiles, and other materials help them accomplish this task. Following are some terms used by acoustical contractors.

  • Absorber – To be consider an acoustic absorber, a material must soak up at least half of the sound energy that contacts it. The effectiveness of a material is determined by a noise reduction coefficient. Materials are tested in enclosed areas where there is an abundance of noise coming from multiple sources, like in an office.
  • Ambient Noise – Ambient noises, or background noises, are sounds from indirect sources. For instance, a phone ringing or someone talking in another room are ambient noises. Sound created by a fan or a heater would also be ambient noise.
  • Articulation Class – This is a rating applied to tiles and other acoustical equipment. This rating only applies to open areas where furniture panels are in use, like in a large office with cubicles. Ceilings with an articulation class of over two hundred are considered high performance.
  • Ceiling Attenuation Class – This is a rating that determines how well an acoustical system blocks sounds between adjacent rooms. A ceiling attenuation class rating of over thirty-five is considered high performance.
  • Furniture Panels – Furniture panels can be made of drywall and other insulating materials. They are used to divide a large area into smaller spaces. Office cubicles are furniture panels. How effective a furniture panel is at noise reduction depends on its composition and height. Panels taller than seventy-two inches are best.
  • Sound Masking – Audio equipment can be used to mask sound. Such audio systems are usually installed to both block out unwanted noises and to aid conversation privacy.
  • Sabin – This is the measure of how well a surface soaks up noise.

Acoustical contractors can create rooms of different sizes to get the best musical sounds. These contractors also help clients who want to block out unwanted sounds from entering their home, or a specific room throughout the building. Some contractors will prefer working in commercial buildings, while others will have more experience creating sound barriers in residential homes. Acoustical contractors work with their customers to block outside sounds from interfering with the room's music. Proper insulation throughout the ceiling and walls, as well as using fiberglass, will help create the barrier. Contractors will conduct vibration analyses to test the sound levels. Customers that would like to install ceiling baffles and sound absorptive wall panels can speak with a consultant to determine how the room will be built and what supplies will need to be used to achieve the best results. Residential homes that want noise reduction will find that acoustical contractors can remodel the home to reduce noise traveling through the walls. Acoustical contractors usually offer repair and installation services. They can conduct audio sound testing for customers. Many will work with building companies to offer those deals on insulation materials. Contractors use their own equipment for the construction of a residential home or commercial building. Clients that will be using audio sound systems can speak with contractors to create the best acoustics in the room. Consumers can speak with several contractors to determine who offers the best price, and which one understands their needs. Some contractors offer free consultations and estimates for potential clients.
