Acupuncture Terms for North Americans

Over the past few decades, Americans have become more open to the concept of natural and traditional treatments for ailments like chronic pain and infertility. One of the most common and most commonly misunderstood practices in this category is the traditional Chinese practice of acupuncture. Acupuncture is, at its most basic, the application of needles to certain key points in the body that are believed to alter the flow of energy and relieve pain.   • Qi - The Chinese belief that energy flows through our bodies and, when properly balanced, can bring tremendous health benefits.
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine - The theory of medicine, originating from China, which emphasizes the balancing of two diametric life forces, Yin and Yang.
  • Yin and Yang - The two opposing forces within each person that, according to traditional Chinese medicine, must be balanced to maintain good health. An imbalance of these forces is believed to be the cause of everything from arthritis to anxiety.
