Some Popular Terms Used by Aerial Photographers
Aerial photography has a variety of uses. Aerial pictures offer a bird’s eye view of a geographic, land area. Aerial photos can be especially handy in mapping out a neighborhood or street system. These pictures can be obtained by satellites or by flying high above an area. Regardless of the method used to obtain them, following are some terms used by aerial photographers.
Focal Length – The amount of space between a camera’s lens and the object being photographed. The longer a focal length, the blurrier an object will appear without specialized equipment or development techniques.
Gyro-stabilized Lens – This is a special camera lens that is especially beneficial in most aerial photography. A gyro-stabilized lens will cushion the lens from vibrations. This is particularly helpful when a photo is being taken from an unstable aerial device, like a helicopter or hang glider, or even while skydiving.
High Camera Angle – This is an angle of a photograph that is essentially straight down from above. Satellites typically take high camera angle photographs. This angle is particularly helpful when charting streets or mapping out a city. High camera angles can also capture the portrait of a vast landscape.
Low Camera Angle – Low camera angle will show significantly less of the tops of objects. This angle is particularly helpful when capturing architectural designs or similar objects. Low camera angles take narrower portraits of landscapes compared to high camera angles.
Resolution – The resolution, or resolving power, of a camera lens is its capacity to differentiate between objects that are close to each other. A camera with a high resolution provides photographers with crisp views of even very distant objects.
Aerial photographers will give panoramic images of many different places. Aerial photography will have pictures of views you can't see from the ground, making sales easy as people often want their house or land photographed in this way. You can hire a photographer to take vertical aerial photos, or to buy from their stock images. Cities from around the world have panorama images of them to give owners a classic view of the city. Orthophotos, parcel maps, topo maps, and satellite images can provide businesses with information on an area that you couldn't get from ground pictures. Sales in the aerial photography industry rely on properly flying and aviation skills. Being able to take these types of images, such as autocad mapping, requires different techniques in areas of photography that not every person is aware of. If you want to hire somebody to take aerial images, see what their experience is and what type of work they have done in the past. They should have files you can look at to see different images of previous jobs. Ensure that they have a camera that can take panoramic or vertical photos. Panorama stock images can give you an idea on the quality of work you would be getting if you were to hire this company. Keep a note of how customer service is with different companies. Obviously, it would be better to work with somebody you feel strives to do the best they can for you. If you want a difficult type of aerial photograph, you may want to hire somebody with more experience in that area than somebody who generally does other techniques that you aren't interested in.
