Agricultural Production Terminology
Agricultural production not only provides us with our food supply, but numerous resources used in industrial manufacturing. Here are a few terms for the crops, supplies and methods of agricultural production:

Herb: Herbs are often defined as a plant with roots, leaves, seeds and flowers used for food medicine or perfume, but are also botanically classified as any flowering, non-woody plant or grass.

Organic Farming: The science of crop raising that either prohibits of severely limits the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, hormonal growth agents, antibiotics and genetically modified organisms.

Livestock: Any domesticated animal raised in confinement with the purpose of using that animal to produce food, labor or fiber.

Natural Resource: Any naturally occurring material that can be used either in its fundamental state or processed into another product.

Cultivate: To prepare land for the raising of crops and also to tend and raise the crops themselves.

Greenhouse: A glass or plastic structure used for growing plants in a light and warm environment. Greenhouses also protect crops from extreme climate variability and pests.

Pesticide: A chemical or biological agent used to kill insects, fungi, weeds and vermin that destroy crops and spread diseases.

Pasture: A plot of land designated for the grazing of livestock.

Sustainable: A broad term generally used to describe a method of agricultural production or manufacture that can endure for the long term without depleting natural resources or causing environmental harm.

Rangelands: Natural landscapes in the form of grasslands, wetlands, woodlands and deserts where livestock may be taken to graze. Rangelands differ from pasturelands in that they grow exclusively wild vegetation, whereas pastures are cultivated by humans.

Fiber Crop: A crop designated for the growth of fibrous materials to be used in textile manufacturing, such as hemp, cotton and silk.

Agriculture refers to the production of food and fiber products by way of farming, growing and cultivation. Cultivation refers to the process of growing plants, or crops, on arable land. Agricultural consultants can advise farmers of the best ways to harvesting, growing and distributing crops and produce such as fruit, vegetables, spices, herbs and other organic foods. Another part of agriculture is the production of meat. Many farmers and other parts of the agricultural industry have livestock that produce meat products, including beef and pork. In addition to this, other farming duties involving livestock also result in the production of milk and eggs from cows and chickens, respectively. You can find more information on agricultural production online. Research different farms and growers in your area to find out what markets, festivals, and stores where they sell their products. Some farms even have websites of their own that you can find information on available crops and produce along with costs per quantity. Consult various farms directly and at farmer's markets to find out who has certain crops and produce that you might enjoy. You can also ask friends and families what farm or grower's products they enjoy. Look into certain farms history and reputation to get an idea of how good their products are as well as how fairly priced their products are. Many farms are in rural areas so it may be a good idea to get an idea of pricing and availability before making a drive out to the farm.
