Important Air Conditioning Room Unit Terms

Many people consider an air conditioning unit a must during the summer months. If you decide to get one or already do, it is important to research and become familiar with the device. Understanding the basic terms used to describe air conditioners will help you choose the right room unit for your space. Room units include portable and window systems.

  • Thermostat - A thermostat controls the temperature, and therefore the cooling mechanism, on your room unit. By choosing an air conditioning unit with a programmable thermostat, you can be sure that your room stays at a consistent temperature.
  • BTU - BTUs measure how efficiently your air conditioner removes heat from the room. You should match the amount of BTUs in your room unit with the actual size of the room. If you choose a portable unit, be aware that the number of BTUs you can purchase is limited. For this reason, portable equipment may not be appropriate for large rooms.
  • Energy Efficiency Ratio - The energy efficiency ratio, or EER, divides the number of BTUs by the number of watts to determine how efficient the appliance is. A high EER will reduce your utility costs, but the equipment will be more expensive to purchase.
  • Filter - The filter in your air conditioner is essential for keeping the system clean. Choose an air conditioning unit with a filter that can be cleaned or is inexpensive to replace. This is particularly important if you have people with allergies living in your home.
  • Fan - All air conditioners have fans, which circulate the cooled air around the room. Choosing an air conditioner with a fan that can operate independently from the rest of the system can be useful for the spring months.

Air conditioning equipment and room cooling units are available for residential properties and commercial buildings alike. These HVAC systems are often used for both heating and cooling nowadays. There are window units that can easily be installed for cooling only. Essentially these systems work to alter the ambient air temperature in a room, office, home or building. Many of them have a built-in fan that blows air out, and adjusts the room temperature to whatever is desired by the user. There are a number of different types of HVAC systems, air conditioning equipment, and cooling units to suit various needs. Typically a technician is required to deal with HVAC systems in residential homes and commercial buildings. This is because the equipment is more complicated, and there is a lot of ductwork and vents to assess. Sometimes these cooling and heating systems require maintenance or repairs in order to make them more efficient. There are dealers all over the United States that sell air conditioning units and equipment. While some of these are portable and small, others are energy efficient and can be mounted in a wall or window. Wholesale companies sell these units and systems to dealers at discounted rates, and the dealers then sell them at retail prices to consumers. Online you can learn a lot more about air conditioning units, HVAC systems, cooling equipment, and window cooling units that do not harm the environment. It is often helpful to focus on the type of unit or system you are interested in.
