Popular Aircraft Equipment, Parts and Supplies Terms

Air travel is one of the most popular forms of transportation. In order to ensure a safe, comfortable flight, experienced aviation technicians are working behind the scenes ensuring the aircraft is fit for flight. In order to have a better understanding of the aircraft repair industry, it is important to understand the terminology associated with aircraft parts, supplies, and equipment. Below are terms to be familiar with when researching aeronautic and aviation parts and supplies.

  • Tundra Tire - In aviation, tundra tires are typically oversized tires used for planes that will be taking off and landing on rough terrain.
  • Altimeter - An altimeter is an instrument used to measure the altitude of an object above a fixed level. The measurement of altitude is called altimetry.
  • Transponder - A transponder, short-for transmitter responder, is an electronic device that produces a response when it receives a radio-frequency interrogation. In aviation, aircraft have transponders to assist in identifying them on radar and on other aircraft's collision avoidance systems.
  • ELT - An ELT, Emergency Locator Transmitter, is designed to emit an emergency signal automatically on impact. It can also be activated manually. An ELT gives Search and Rescue teams a much better chance of pinpointing the exact location of a downed commercial jet or private aircraft.
  • Gust Lock - A gust lock on an aircraft is a mechanism that locks control surfaces in place preventing random movement and possible damage of the surface from wind while parked. Gust locks may be internal or external. A gust lock can pose a serious safety hazard if its removal is omitted before an aircraft's takeoff because it renders the flight control inoperative.
  • Fuel Stick - A fuel stick is a hollow, straw-like tool which is inserted into an plane's fuel tank to determine exactly how many gallons of usable fuel are available.
