Popular Aluminum Terms

Aluminum is a metal that is silver or white in color and has the atomic number thirteen. It is commonly used in alloys and can be found in almost all households in the form of aluminum foil. But did you know that aluminum has a vast array of important uses beyond simple cooking foil? Aluminum sheets are another common cooking tool. Outside the kitchen, aluminum siding can be found on suburban homes. Fishing boats are largely made from this useful and light element. With so many diverse applications, it's no surprise that a great deal of esoteric vocabulary exists in the field. The following are some of the most common.

  • Aluminum Siding - A popular construction material made out of polished aluminum. Suburban planners build entire neighborhoods with aluminum siding. Siding companies often recycle the raw material from scrap and provide it to contractors cheaply. Aluminum siding is popular in housing because it's a very easy metal to clean.
  • Aluminum Alloys - Metals made by mixing aluminum in specific proportion with other elements. Some pipes and tubing are made from aluminum alloys. They are popular in construction for their light weight, durable properties and resistance to corrosion.
  • Aluminum Foil - Popular type of cookware found in most American homes. Aluminum is a popular kitchen metal because it serves no known biological function and is remarkably nontoxic. It is a perfect substance for cooking sheets, plates and kitchen tubing.
  • Aluminum Fishing Boats - Small, light fishing boats. Inexpensive to make and purchase. Aluminum is good for boats for many of the same reasons it is popular for cooking.
  • Anodized Metal - Anodized aluminum has undergone a process of eloctrolytic passivation that increases the thickness of the natural oxides. Oxides occur spontaneously on aluminum surfaces. These thicker oxides increase corrosion protection.

Aluminum distributors supply boat manufacturers, food canners, construction crews, architectural companies, and other organizations with durable metal products. These products often include aluminum sheets, bars, tubing, and pipes that are specially designed for certain types of projects. Not all aluminum distributors have and carry the same types of products though, so companies should make sure that they choose a supply source that can accommodate their needs. An aluminum company can choose to acquire metal from recycled cans and products or through an extraction process. Recycled materials are often less expensive, so the manufacturers try to get aluminum from recycling plants. The raw material is then processed into shapes through extrusion and other methods. After the company has acquired its aluminum, it might decide to use chemical processes to make it more durable, malleable, or otherwise useful for certain types of manufacturers. A company that makes wiring might choose to purchase its aluminum from a supplier or bulk distributor that has anodized products because anodized aluminum conducts electricity more easily. Boat manufacturers, architectural firms, food canners, and construction contractors might want to pay more attention to choosing suppliers that have aluminum that use extrusion to produce specific shapes. A canning company does not necessarily need the same types of metal as an aircraft manufacturer or a construction crew working on building frames. You can find out what types corrosion resistant alloys, plates, sheets, and foils that the company suppliers have by using a search engine to locate their websites or web pages. Most of these companies will have information on their main site page about the types of products that they sell. You can also use these sites to choose a company that has the stainless steel and alloys that you need as well.
