Ambulette Service Terms to Know

Many people are familiar with an emergency ambulance, which is dispatched to provide immediate medical care as well as transport. However, there are several types of ambulette services that do not involve a standard emergency ambulance. Below are some common medical transport terms.

  • Fly Car - A fly car dispatches one person, usually a paramedic, to the scene of a medical emergency. The paramedic can deliver life saving care, but the vehicle is not suitable for transporting a patient to the hospital. Fly cars, also called response units, can be vans, cars, motorcycles, or even horses.
  • Charity Ambulance - These ambulette services help sick patients leave the hospital during long term stays. Often provided by charities, these ambulances are usually modified private buses.
  • Mobile Data Terminal – This piece of equipment is used in conjunction with a two way radio to provide information to the EMTs in an emergency ambulance. The terminals record when EMTs receive a call, when they arrive, and help the driver with any navigational needs.
  • Evidence Gathering CCTV - This form of closed circuit television tapes emergency personal while they are working. This creates a record to confirm or dispute allegations of malpractice.
  • Data Recorders - Data recorders are used to monitor the use of sirens, speed, seat belt usage, and other EMS vehicle capabilities.
  • Tail Lift - Tail lifts are fitted into ambulance vehicles to raise heavy loads. EMTs aiding obese patients, patients in hospital beds, and patients using neonatal equipment may require this piece of equipment.
  • Trauma Lighting - Many patient-transport emergency vehicles are fitted with red or blue lights. These lights can be used in cases where the patient has photo sensitivity.

    Many people who are wheel chair bound need to be able to get from place to place. For this, they can hire ambulette services to pick them up, load them, and drop them off at their destination. Slightly different from ambulances, which often operates in a true emergency and work for hospitals, ambulette services are private transportation companies that offer non emergency transit rides to and from doctor appointments or physical therapy. Ambulette services, staffed by qualified emergency medical technicians (EMTs), can provide transportation to and from mental health facilities, medical centers, clinics, and hospitals. Patients may need MRIs, dialysis, chemotherapy, or routine doctor exams. Some people call ambulette services if they have fallen or have suffered some other kind of accident in which they need help. To this end, some ambulette services, staffed by paramedics, do provide emergency assistance and will use sirens and lights in these cases. Most ambulette services accept most forms of insurance, including Medicaid. They utilize a variety of vehicles, such as high top wheelchairs vans, buses, and passenger capacity vans. Each company should boast a fleet of safe, up-to-code vehicles that have passed regular inspection. Ambulette service paramedics should stock the vans, also called transit wagons, with any necessary First Aid and other medical supplies and equipment, such as gurneys, stretchers, medicine, and basic life support machines. First emerging in ancient times, ambulances consisted of simple carts used for transporting patients by force. It wasn’t until the 19th and 20th centuries that advances gave rise to the first self-powered ambulances.
