Animal Hospital Terms to Know

Whether you have a dog, cat, bird, rabbit or other animal, you’ll inevitably need to take your pet to an animal hospital to receive some type of treatment. Get to know the following 7 terms so you can familiarize yourself with animal hospitals before you need to go.

  • Hospital - Animal hospitals are typically 24 hour care centers that provide a variety of routine and emergency services to maintain the health of your pet. Animal hospitals are different than vet offices because they typically are open longer hours and have an array of medical equipment.
  • Veterinarian - A person who treats animals and a practitioner of veterinary medicine. Some vets practice medicine in a limited field, which includes the treatment of dogs, cats and other small pets. While other vets practice production medicine, which includes the treatment of cattle, swine, horse/equine, sheep, poultry and other exotic animals.
  • Veterinary Technician - A person who is trained to assist veterinarians. Technicians may perform a variety of tasks, such as skin scrapings, collecting urine, taking x-rays, and performing lab procedures and tests.
  • Vet Specialist - A person who provides services to other veterinarians in special areas, such as surgery, ophthalmology, radiology, anesthesiology, and internal medicine. They have a higher level of expertise than a general vet practitioner does.
  • Vaccines - Animal hospitals can administer vaccines for your pet in order to maintain their good health. Common vaccines for cats and dogs include: rabies, bordetella, parvo, lyme, and feline leukemia.
  • Diagnostic Tests - Animal clinic technicians may perform diagnostic tests, such as x-rays and CT scans, to screen for any ailments affecting your pet’s health.
  • Surgery - Most common surgeries at clinics include spaying and neutering, but other emergency surgeries are performed according to the care needed by the pet. Animals are given anesthetics so they don’t feel pain.

Animal hospitals are located all over the world. In fact, there are numerous pet clinics and emergency vet services in the United States alone. With over three hundred million people living in the US, there are a lot of domesticated pets that require health care to some degree. Many of these animals are dogs, cats, rabbits, and birds. Depending on the town or city you reside in, there is likely at least one veterinarian or animal hospital in your area. As you may be aware, there are different types of animal clinics and vets. Some of these pet hospitals are open 24 hours a day, and provide emergency services to animals. Other clinics are only open during set hours each week, and provide health care to pets, such as routine check-ups, vaccines, and medicines that treat certain health conditions. There are also some animal care centers and vets that assist with certain surgery procedures. The animal doctor or veterinarian that works at the clinic can inform you of what vaccines and surgical procedures they handle. It is common for many vets to deal with large dogs, small exotic birds, and even rabbits. However, a specialty vet or equine technician may be necessary for individuals who own horses. It is not difficult to obtain more information on animal hospitals and shelters. In fact, you can get in touch with any vets or animal clinics in your area by phone. This way you can make any necessary inquiries regarding a specific pet or animal.
