Major Household Appliance Repair Terms to Know

When it comes to major home appliances, the general consensus is that they don’t make them like they used to. Kitchens in particular seem to be epicenters for repairs between the stove and oven, refrigerator, and freezer. Even if you invest the money in quality brands, before too long a repairman will most likely need to visit your house. Below are several key terms to know when hiring a company to repair your gas or electric household appliances.

  • Quote – When something goes wrong with an appliance, a technician will come to your home and inspect the appliance for signs of wear or corrosion. Once the problem has been identified, the technician will give you a quote for the cost of the repairs.
  • Service Call – Once a customer has agreed to the quote, the technician will order new parts if necessary, then replace and repair the defective part at the house. When the repair is finished, they’ll test the machine to make sure it’s in good working order, making any alignments necessary. Finally, they’ll clean up the area and the appliance.
  • Mechanical System – One of two major systems in an appliance. An example is the turning mechanism in your kitchen microwave. If the microwave plate will not physically turn, the problem is in the mechanical system.
  • Control System – The other of two major system in an appliance. If the microwave is not heating up but the plate is successfully turning, the problem is in the electric control system.
  • Warranty – A period of time during which the appliance is guaranteed to work properly. Under the warranty, all repairs and maintenance are free of charge to the customer.

Every home owner needs to perform minor repairs on his or her house from time to time. But if your "minor" repairs are becoming increasingly "major" you may want to consider calling in a professional. A professional repair expert can perform repairs - major or minor - on your house and home. These experts can fix all of your kitchen appliances. They can stop your refrigerator, freezer, or dish washer from leaking, for instance. They can find you spare parts for your microwave, stove, or oven. They can even fix your toaster. They can fix just about anything in your kitchen, really. They can fix just about everything in your laundry room too. For instance, they can help you repair your washing machine and dryer. They can even fix your heating and cooling systems, and your electric systems. They can repair an electric or gas heater on the fritz. They can also repair your air conditioner. These repair experts are usually independent contractors, but sometimes they may also work for a company. Independent contractors are often less expensive to work with that the repair men and women who work for large companies, but that isn't always the case. So, the next time you encounter something small in need of repair, you may want to attempt to fix it yourself. But the next time you see an appliance or a piece of machinery in need of major repair, you should really contact a repair expert for help. Odds are you'll be happier in the long run if you don't try to tackle the job yourself.
