Archery Terms to Know

Archery is a sport with a long, rich history. Today it is primarily practiced for recreation and sport. Many different types of equipment and supplies can be used for archery. Familiarity with common terms can assist in selecting the right type of equipment for a particular archer's needs.

  • Longbow - A traditional type of bow which is nearly as tall as the person using it. The limbs of the bow may be completely round, or rounded on one side. The height allows the archer to draw the string and arrow back particularly far.
  • Flatbow - A style of bow is similar to a longbow in height, but the limbs of the bow are flatter and wider. This difference makes a flatbow more resilient to stress.
  • Compound Bow - A type of bow which does not rely exclusively on the archer's strength to pull back the string. Instead, it uses pulleys and other types of mechanical advantages to supply the arrow with greater force. These may be especially well suited to new students who are still developing upper body strength.
  • Crossbow - A type of bow which is drawn mechanically, rather than manually, and supplies archers with much greater power. They are commonly used for hunting. A quiver can be mounted onto a crossbow for added convenience in reloading.
  • Fletching - The plastic fins or feathers at the end of an arrow. They supply the arrow with greater stability. Keeping arrows stored in a quiver can help keep fletching from becoming damaged.
  • Bracer - Also called an arm guard. This type of protective equipment keeps the string from hitting the inside of the archer's arm.
