Popular Art Terms

If you're a fan of the fine arts and you live in a heavily populated area, you've got a lot of opportunities to view museums and art institutes full of oil paintings, sculptures, photography and film. And while longtime art aficionados may have no problem differentiating modern art from fine art. But for beginners stepping into an art gallery filled with paintings, prints and photography can be somewhat confusing. So before you head out for a showing of prints or canvases at your local gallery or museums, here are some terms you might want to know.

  • Abstract Art - Abstract paintings and graphics are not representational. This means that are not necessarily meant to depict a certain person or object. Interpreting what the meaning of the art may be is usually left to the viewer.
  • Deviant Art - There are two meanings for this term. There is a vibrant online artist community called DeviantArt where artists sell their wares and interact with one another. Also, in the 1930's, totalitarian regimes branded art forms and artists they didn't like as deviant art.
  • Fine Art - Technically speaking, this term refers to art that is done for aesthetic beauty whether it's an oil painting on canvas or a sculpture. It's meant to distinguish these forms from practical arts like drafting.
  • Modern Art - While the style is tough to pin down, the concept is a little easier. This term generally applies to artists who broke out of traditional techniques and subject matter in the period between the 1860's and 1970's.

Many people need or want art, but they might not know how to choose a company that can offer them all of the art supplies and services that they need. Art includes painting, sculpture, modern, abstract, vintage, gallery, museum, restoration, graphic, reproduction, film, contemporary, subjective, creative, wall, picture, history, school, buy, print, lesson, cheap, discount and other genres and aspects. By using the following guidelines you should be able to find the art company that is best for you. Many people might need fine art or decorative art for their homes and offices. They might prefer traditional, scenic photography, or they might want abstract that represents people, animals, music, or architecture that is made by well known artists that sell their works in galleries. In order to find the company that can give you all of the services and products that you need, you should ask several questions. Companies that have several years of experience can often offer you better services and more products than those that have fewer years of experience, so ask the companies how long they have been in business. Asking them for references and if they are affiliated with any other companies or organizations can also help you determine how reliable the companies will be. Customer service is also very important. In order to determine how much importance the companies place on their customers, you should ask the companies what levels of customer service they can offer you. So whether you need help with painting, sculpture, modern, vintage, gallery or museum art, make sure you choose the art dealer that will meet your needs.
