Popular Art Terms
If you're a fan of the fine arts and you live in a heavily populated area, you've got a lot of opportunities to view museums and art institutes full of oil paintings, sculptures, photography and film. And while longtime art aficionados may have no problem differentiating modern art from fine art. But for beginners stepping into an art gallery filled with paintings, prints and photography can be somewhat confusing. So before you head out for a showing of prints or canvases at your local gallery or museums, here are some terms you might want to know.
Abstract Art - Abstract paintings and graphics are not representational. This means that are not necessarily meant to depict a certain person or object. Interpreting what the meaning of the art may be is usually left to the viewer.
Deviant Art - There are two meanings for this term. There is a vibrant online artist community called DeviantArt where artists sell their wares and interact with one another. Also, in the 1930's, totalitarian regimes branded art forms and artists they didn't like as deviant art.
Fine Art - Technically speaking, this term refers to art that is done for aesthetic beauty whether it's an oil painting on canvas or a sculpture. It's meant to distinguish these forms from practical arts like drafting.
Modern Art - While the style is tough to pin down, the concept is a little easier. This term generally applies to artists who broke out of traditional techniques and subject matter in the period between the 1860's and 1970's.
