Art classes help students to develop their creative talents or turn their passions into careers. Below are five terms to be familiar with when researching art education programs.

  • Art Institute - A school dedicated exclusively to teaching the fine arts and preparing students for careers in the arts. Art institutes offer associate's, bachelor's, and master's degree programs in disciplines like painting, sculpting, photography, graphic design, and fashion.
  • University Art Program - A fine arts program taught at a public or private university that results in a bachelor's or master's degree in the arts. A student in a university art program takes classes that fill general education or liberal studies requirements, as well as classes that focus on their particular artistic specialty.
  • Art Instruction Classes - Classes that teach the visual arts but do not result in a degree or certification. Art instruction classes are available to learners of all skill levels, with classes designed specifically for children.   • Online Art Instruction - Correspondence courses in the arts that are available over the internet. Painting and drawing courses are the most common type of online art instruction. Although most online programs do not result in a degree or certificate, some traditional art schools do offer online classes.
  • Portfolio - A collection of an artist's work. Art school helps students to develop their portfolios, which are used by perspective employers to gauge the quality and style of an artist's work during the hiring process.
