Common Art Education Terms

Art classes help students to develop their creative talents or turn their passions into careers. Art instruction is available for hobbyists who want to improve skills like drawing or painting and for students developing the creative and professional skills for a career in the arts. Below are five terms to be familiar with when researching art education programs.

  • Art Institute - A school dedicated exclusively to teaching the fine arts and preparing students for careers in the arts. Art institutes offer associate's, bachelor's, and master's degree programs in disciplines like painting, sculpting, photography, graphic design, and fashion.
  • University Art Program - A fine arts program taught at a public or private university that results in a bachelor's or master's degree in the arts. A student in a university art program takes classes that fill general education or liberal studies requirements, as well as classes that focus on their particular artistic specialty.
  • Art Instruction Classes - Classes that teach the visual arts but do not result in a degree or certification. Art instruction classes are available to learners of all skill levels, with classes designed specifically for children. Hands on art instruction classes can be found at local studios, community centers, or art schools.
  • Online Art Instruction - Correspondence courses in the arts that are available over the internet. Painting and drawing courses are the most common type of online art instruction. Although most online programs do not result in a degree or certificate, some traditional art schools do offer online classes.
  • Portfolio - A collection of an artist's work. Art school helps students to develop their portfolios, which are used by perspective employers to gauge the quality and style of an artist's work during the hiring process.

Many people, who major in art or acquire degrees in this field, work in museums, as animation experts, or as graphic design specialists. Clearly art is a very broad field, and encompasses many facets of visual creations. While there is fine art such as paintings and drawings, there are also fashion designs, which are expressed through unique apparel. Depending on the degree or education you are after, there are different university options to consider. Many graduates of these classes and programs become very successful in different lines of work. However, you may need to be a student for two to four years prior to completing an art program. A lot just depends on the degree you are interested in, and the art school or institute you enroll in. While some people are interested in interior design, others prefer children’s illustrations, or even photography. You can get more information pertaining to design schools and private art institutes online. In fact, this is a wonderful place to begin when you are trying to learn more about your options regarding schooling for painting, sculpting, children's drawing, or computer animation.
