Popular Artificial Flowers Plants and Trees Terms

Many floral professionals and flower shops across the country offer artificial plants, flowers, and even trees. Many of these fake plants are made from silk or plastic. However, a number of commercial buildings and businesses require this artificial foliage as a form of decoration that does not require maintenance. Some floral products offered are palm trees, red roses, hydrangeas, and even small cacti. Some useful terminology is posted below to help you broaden your knowledge of artificial foliage.

  • Dry Floral Foam – A spongy foam that is used as a base for dried or silk flower arrangements. This foam does not absorb liquids, but does hold flower stems securely in place. It can be cut to meet different needs and arrangement designs.
  • Fiber Optic Flowers – These are battery-powered or electric artificial flowers that utilize flexible plastic or glass fibers that transmit light. Typically these products provide various color changes, and light is transmitted along the edges or each floral pedal.
  • Silk Ivy – This is typically a vine of ivy garland that varies in length. It is made from silk or plastic, and can be draped in residential homes or businesses as decorative foliage. An fake twig or vine structure often runs through the center of the ivy leaves.
  • Topiary – Although not needed much when dealing with fake flowers and plants, this is the practice of clipping trees and shrubs into ornamental shapes and unique designs.
  • Fabric Hydrangea – This is a type of climbing plant or shrub that is made from fabric. It generally has small florets or flowering heads that make it decorative.

Artificial plants and flowers are a great alternative to fresh ones, because they are easier to keep alive. You do not have to water them, yet they still look great as a centerpiece or decoration in the home. Many fake trees or flower arrangements are used to liven up office spaces, funeral homes, and shops where living plants may not thrive due to the lack of sun in the indoor environment. Florists that work in harsher outdoor environments for weddings or outdoor events, where the weather may not be predictable and can ruin roses or orchids, they may replace them with silk or plastic flowers that are not as easily destroyed. Fake flower arrangements are created in a wide variety of styles, like tropical, so there is flexibility when working them into an arrangement. Also, party planners can take advantage of plastic trees, like bamboo, palms or ferns when they are trying to create a themed party within a limited budget. More so, they can work with local manufacturers to purchase these trees at wholesale prices, having them to use for future events. Creating artificial flowers, plants and trees out of different materials is an art form. From creating ivy leaves out of acrylic material, to mastering the art of rose petals creating in painstaking details out of silk, these plants are made to look stunningly realistic. Other materials that can be used include clay, polyester, paper and soap. To find out out the process of creating artificial plant life, or to order some of the results or dried flowers to decorate your home, check in with a local florist, or the internet.
