Artists Agents
Artists are professionals in their field who use varied mediums to create works of art, like sculptures and paintings. Artists can also refer to those in the entertainment industry like actors, actresses, singers, models, and writers. Whatever talent each professional has, he or she should have representation. Agents can represent artists, providing industry management, and coordinating networking, contacts, and publicity appearances. Agents are often responsible for the image of the clients they represent. They book shows, appearances, commercials, gallery events, and exhibits for the artists, acting as reps and liaisons. An artist may go with a particular agency due to location, rates, or reputation for promoting music albums, books, and other works. One agency may focus on art, promoting local artists in a particular area or community. Another may focus on the entertainment world, offering representation for actors and musicians. Agents go where the talent is, and that is usually in large cities such as Los Angeles or New York. These professionals know the market inside and out and can provide valuable services for clients. Being an artist takes time and effort. Many artists simply don't have the time or resources to promote themselves. Consequently, they hire agents to manage this for them, and rely on these agents to effectively market them and their skills. To get an agent, one must present a portfolio of previous work, which may be comprised of head shots and other photos, job resumes, and referrals. Artist agents mainly provide networking opportunities and publicity management, and may also accompany artists on shows, gigs, book signings, and painting exhibits to further promote their name.

If you're an artist and are looking for agents in the area to represent you, there are a few things to consider. Some reps are better at marketing than others. Asking friends and family if they have any information on different art agents can be the first step in finding an agent for you. Other resources you should use to find agents would be to look through the classifieds or by networking with other artists. You will need to have a strong portfolio showing your best work while on the market to finding an agent. Some agents will work nationally, while others will do international work as well. Painters will have different market selling and pricing techniques than other art forms. Different agents and reps will have different publicity recognition and organizations that they work with. When looking for an agent, visit local art shows, competitions, and exhibits to get an idea on how the industry works and what type of marketing you will need to do to ensure you get the proper publicity. Agents who work with song writers may not have the best networking group for painters or authors. Deadlines are important to keep showing you're serious and committed to your work. Ask agents what type of deadlines you would have with them, what shows and exhibits they could enter you in, and how much they charge for their services. You could ask reps who else they represent to get an idea on their marketing strategy and if that would work with you as well.
