Common Art Supply Terms

Art and craft supplies are very useful for a number of purposes. Whether assisting a child with a school project, creating fine art, or crafting as a hobby, knowing the right supplies to use, will make it easier to bring your crafting idea to life!

  • Acrylic Paint - A fast-drying paint that can be diluted with water, however, once dry, it becomes resistant to water. It can be used on anything from paper to brick. It resembles watercolors once dry, and can easily be washed off of hands with soap and water.
  • Foam Core - Also called foam board. These can be used for anything from kids' crafts to backing for matted art. Foam core can be found in a wide range of sizes and colors.
  • Watercolor Paper - Paper that is specially designed and textured for absorbing watercolor paints. It can also be used with other media like charcoal. Many art schools and classes may require students to work on paper that is ideally suited for the medium.
  • Stretcher Bar - A stretcher bar is a tool used for stretching canvas. Many artists save money by stretching their own canvases.
  • Field Easel - An easel designed for easy transportation. They are lightweight and collapsible. Field easels are often made out of wood or aluminum. Many also are designed with hooks and surfaces to keep art supplies handy.
  • Plaster - A common, relatively cheap medium used for sculptures. It is often used for casting and molds. Plaster remains quite soft after it has set and can be easily manipulated with sandpaper and tools. Kid's often enjoy using plaster because it is easy to work with and only has to be mixed with water.

Arts and crafts are a fun pastime for kids and adults alike. This is a favorite hobby of many, whether on an amateur or professional level. Arts and crafts include anything that can be used to create something else. Children do these in class for holidays, for example, to illustrate and enhance lesson plans. They can also do these at home with mom and dad, to come up with fun projects such as painting, card making, and clay sculpting. Professionals also work with arts and crafts to produce sculptures, ceramics, scrapbooking, decoupage, and sewing. Arts and crafts may require a simple crayon and paper, or may involve something as elaborate as an easel with a rainbow of paints and a variety of brushes. Whatever the case, artists of all abilities need basic supplies and materials to get started, such as sketch pads and pencils. Arts and crafts stores sell items like construction paper, stickers, ribbons, beads, and tools like die cutters and scissors. You’ll also find oil canvas paints, coloring books, glitter, watercolors, and glue. DIYers can purchase decorative wood items such as shelving to paint and hang. Usually, craft stores have a whole fabric section for those who like to sew their own clothes. They may also have a seasonal or holiday section devoted to plaster Christmas ornaments and related supplies. Many crafts store also hold demonstrations and instructional courses for kids and adults to sign up for. One may focus on quilting for beginners, while another may focus on knitting. Kids can learn how to cut paper with toddler scissors, and adults can pick up some paints for their next canvas painting. Hobby stores are another option for crafters. There, they can find model cars to put together, for example, or find a new hobby.
