Before doing business with companies that sell asphalt and asphalt products, you will need to learn a few terms that will help you communicate with them more easily. The more that you know about the terms asphalt companies use, the more likely it is that you can choose an option that gives you access to the goods and services that you need.

  • Asphalt – a semisolid material that has extremely useful binding properties. Although most people associate the word with blacktop used to pave roads, this pavement is actually a combination of asphalt and mineral aggregate.
  • Asphalt Concrete – another name for used in the industry for blacktop. It’s a combination of asphalt and concrete used primarily in the road construction and roofing industries.
  • Road Patch – a mixture of materials, often concrete and asphalt, used to fill pot holes and cracks in roads. Depending on the type of material used, the patch can last for quite a long time.
  • Concrete Sealer – sealants used to protect concrete for the destructive forces of inclement weather and frequent use. Construction companies also commonly use these products to protect drive ways, roofs, and decks.
  • Gravel – gravel is the most commonly used road pavement material in the world. Although most urban construction companies on concrete and cement to pave heavily trafficked roads, the vast majority of roads in the world are covered in gravel. Gravel consists of fragments that can vary greatly in size from tiny fragments to large rocks.

Asphalt makes public pavement possible. This mixture of asphalt and crushed gravel is used for paving roads, driveways, walkways, foundations, and parking lots. But it's not always used on the ground; it's also used for roofs and decks. Asphalt products are sold by asphalt product providers, either on the retail or wholesale level. They are used by asphalt pavement companies, contractors, and general consumers too. Asphalt and related products can be used to pave, seal, fill cracks, coat, or patch damages. It fills a variety of roles for commercial and residential projects. Companies in this industry may offer services like resurfacing, seal coating, composite (asphalt over concrete) services, repairs, and concrete and cement laying. Additionally, they can offer stencils, cold patch asphalt, sealers, and asphalt overlays. Asphalt products vary by manufacturer, but most companies sell cement, solvents, emulsions, sealants, and coatings. These are all used on a daily basis by contractors and construction companies to pave roadways and parking lots, repair cracks, and fill in potholes. These products are also used in building swimming pool decks, as well as for adhering shingles to roofs. The word “asphalt” comes from the Greek “asphaltos,” which means “secure.” A fitting name for a product that provides binding effects for a variety of purposes. The ancient Egyptians and Romans used a more primitive form of asphalt to bind and insulate. So as you can see, asphalt is nothing new and has been around for centuries. Construction companies, contractors, and individuals who need to purchase asphalt and related products can seek out listings of providers online or check phone book ads.
