There are quite a few situations where individuals, companies and even local governments can benefit from grouping together in associations. These organizations work for the benefit of their membership. There are several kinds of associations. Professional associations bring together members of a trade or profession, on a national or local basis. In some cases, these take on the qualities of trade unions, allowing for collective bargaining. For example, professional associations are often able to obtain group plans, allowing their members to obtain cheaper medical insurance. These organizations are associated with a specific trade, industry or profession. In most cases, professional associations are non profit organizations. Some members of professional organizations are white collar workers including doctors, businessmen and lawyers. Although non profit, they generally employ paid management. Homeowner associations are another very common form. These associations may be voluntary or mandatory, and allow homeowners to group together in order to maintain the feel of a neighborhood or community. In some cases, though, homeowner associations make themselves disliked by a portion of their membership, as they often enforce arcane rules. These exist on a very local level and tend to be created initially by the developer. Another common association is a college or university's alumni association or alumni society. These are set up to facilitate networking and the exchange of information between graduates. Most, but not all associations have some form of paid, full time management and administration. Homeowner and alumni associations tend to be made up of volunteers. Associations provide resources, including online resources, to their members. They may publish books or enforce standards of behavior and business ethics on their members. They generally fund themselves by collecting dues from members.
