Automobile Air Conditioning Equipment Terminology

AC units are an important luxury for many motorists. Cooling the air in an automobile is a complex process. Air conditioning installation and repair should only be accomplished by a certified HVAC specialist. Even if you are not a certified HVAC specialist, it is important to understand how the equipment in your vehicle operates. In order to understand automobile air conditioning, you must understand key terms associated with it.

  • Evaporator – An evaporator causes refrigeration of warm air. Warm air enters the evaporator, and the refrigerant within absorbs the heat from the air. Conversely, the warm air absorbs the cold from the refrigerant. This process also leeches moisture from the formerly warm air.
  • Compressor – The compressor extracts refrigerant, which has begun to boil and turn into vapor because of the absorbed heat, from the evaporator. The vapor is pressurized, which causes its temperature to go even higher.
  • Condenser – The condenser receives the hot, pressurized vapor from the compressor. This part cools the vapor, turning it back into a warm liquid.
  • Receiver-drier – The receiver-drier collects the warm liquid from the condenser. This part dries and filters the refrigerant.
  • Thermal Expansion Valve – Because of the varying temperature and consistencies of refrigerant found in the receiver-drier, the thermal expansion valve easily gets a supply of adequately cooled liquid. The thermal expansion valve carries this supply back to the evaporator. In some AC equipment, an orifice tube is present rather than a thermal expansion valve. Both of these parts can become clogged with debris, and a thermal expansion valve has small components that can suffer from corrosion.

It can get pretty hot in a car, just like in a home, especially at the peak of summer. Air conditioning units that come with most new cars cool everything down, allowing for a more enjoyable driving experience. Sometimes these systems can break down, either due to a needed replacement part, or due to plain old age. Handy DIYers can install or fix their own automobile's air conditioning system using kits purchased from an auto supplies store or online. Car and truck owners choose to hire a qualified mechanic to handle this job. Certain equipment and supplies are needed when it comes to ACs, such as pumps, diagnostic gauges, and vacuums. Many things can go wrong with the air conditioning, including the refrigerant, compressor, condenser, valves, and gaskets. Some things need to be replaced, while other times, an overhaul is required of the whole system. Sometimes, just maintenance is needed to keep an AC system in good working order. Driers, radiators, accumulators, hoses, and seals are all needed for a car's AC unit to work. Consequently, refrigerant is needed to keep things cool. Mechanics, used car lots, and dealerships may buy in bulk from automobile air conditioning equipment wholesalers so they have enough supplies to stock their shelves. General consumers can purchase the parts they need through an auto parts repair store, and even online. Websites may detail full product lines, featuring items like switches, leak detection kits, and fluorescent dyes. The Internet also offers DIYers helpful articles on how to change auto AC unit parts.
