Key Terms Relating to Automobile Customization and Restoration

Customization and restoration of your mobile vehicle can be daunting task. Restoration may involve painting or repairing your classic vehicle. Customization could mean a paint job or a number of other automotive upgrades. There are several things that can be done to customize the interior of your classic car or truck as well. For an antique car, there is some difficulty in finding the necessary accessories to do the job. You may need to special order parts to complete necessary repairs. The following are key terms relating to customization and restoration of your automobile.

  • Chopped Top - A type of customization in which the top is lowered. This requires removal of the window posts, lowering the top and rewelding.
  • Toe Angle - A measurement of the direction and degree that the front wheels of the automobile are pointed. If the wheels are pointed inward, that is known as toe-in. If the wheels are pointed outward, it is referred to as toe-out.
  • Camber - A measurement of the degree and angle the wheels are tilting. Positive camber means the tops of the tires are further apart than the bottoms. Negative camber means the tops of the tires are closer together than the bottoms.
  • Frenched - A customization process that involves removing a factory seam from your automobile. This may include removing a factory piece and welding a new custom piece to the body or frame of the car.

Automobile customization and restoration is a major industry nowadays. Over the past fifty years, many vehicle owners have been interested in restoring and repairing classic cars and trucks. This process often requires custom paint jobs, unique decals, interior fabrics, and old mirror accessories. There are many automobile restoration and customization professionals available in the United States alone, not to mention many other automotive repair shops around the world that work on vintage trucks and antique cars. Depending on the classic vehicle or motorcycle, different parts and old accessories may be needed for successful restoration. It is common for an auto customization shop to take a look at a vintage truck or car in person before they attempt to restore it. Once the body, frame, engine, and interior have been examined, the expert can discuss with the owner what parts are needed for repair. While one classic pick-up truck may need new door windows, an antique sports car may require unique seat covers and paint decals. It all depends on the vehicle, and what needs to be restored. Depending on the automobile and how difficult it is to acquire the parts, the cost can vary quite a bit. By getting in touch with a local automobile restoration and customization shop, you can obtain more information on custom paint jobs, vintage vehicle engine repair, and truck frame restoration. In order to get the information you need, it is generally a good idea to mention the type of car of truck you have in mind for repairs.
