Popular Automobile Engine Rebuilding Terms

Many times when an engine goes out, the first option people often think of is getting a new car. Though this may sometimes be the best option, many times it is cheaper and better to have a mechanic rebuild the motor. If you are considering an overhaul, you might find the following terms helpful.

  • Engine Block – This is an integrated structure inside the vehicle comprising the cylinders of a motor and the surrounding components. This includes intake and exhaust ports, the crankcase and coolant passages. These are integrated into one single, sturdy design. During a complete overhaul, everything is taken off and the repair goes all the way to the block. After this has been cleaned and oiled, new components are added back on.
  • Head Gasket – This fills the gap between the block and cylinder head. It seals the combustion chamber, preventing leaks. Repairing this part is a complicated job and should be left to a professional.
  • Crankcase – This houses the automobile's crankshaft. It has many distinct mechanisms, but they are often integrated into the block. They are typically made of cast iron or aluminum. It also contains oil that is used to lubricate the pistons. If this area gets dry, it can seize the engine, requiring a rebuild.
  • Crankshaft – This converts the up and down movement of the pistons to a force that moves the wheels of the automobile. As these fire, this rotational force is converted into a linear force by the crankshaft, which is joined to these by a connecting rod.
  • Camshaft – This is the mechanism in charge of opening and closing the valve train. The cams directly activate the valves or do so after a brief separation. The timing belt links this mechanism up with the crankshaft so the valves are in sync.

Rebuilding an automobile includes replacing the parts that no longer work with new ones or used parts that have been properly maintained and are in excellent condition. The crankshaft, galley plugs, and pistons are just a few of the parts that can be involved when rebuilding an engine. Remanufactured motors are a great way to make the car's performance better or to keep the car in working condition. Car enthusiasts can easily buy a used domestic or imported car to disassemble and rebuild it to perfection. They can buy used parts that are still in excellent condition for various cylinders, including rods, spark plugs, and more. Of course, mechanics are available to help throughout the rebuilding process, so owners can be sure the engine and transmission are safely installed. Salvage yards are great places to find the parts needed when rebuilding a vehicle's engine and transmission. Engine blocks, crate engines, galleys, and more that are in good condition can be cleaned and inspected to make sure there are no un-fixable cracks or other problems. OEM parts can easily be found at discounted costs for car owners who want to rebuild a V8 engine. There are companies available that sell remanufactured and rebuilt automobile engines to car repair shops and car enthusiasts. Mechanics can be consulted throughout the rebuilding process when owners aren't sure what needs to be replaced or how it needs to be installed. Freeze plugs, galley plugs, engine blocks, fuel pumps, and other parts can be bought through a mechanic if owners cannot find them on their own. The internet is another resource owners can have to find information when wanting to rebuild a car's motor.
