Race Car Equipment Terminology

Automobile racing is a fast-paced sport involving the racing of cars, and even motorcycles, for sport. There is a great deal of essential equipment, safety gear, and conversion components available for your race car. Before shopping for the gear you need, familiarize yourself with the following important terms and definitions.

  • Roll Cage - A roll cage or roll bar can be added to a race car's frame, or chassis, to better protect the driver in the event of a crash. Reinforced areas around the race car's drivers seat prevent the person from being crushed if the vehicle rolls onto its roof.
  • Harness - Another safety measure, aside from a helmet of course, is a racing harness. Drivers have more than a simply seat belt. Instead, they have five point or more harnesses that secure them to the seat. Helmets are sometimes harnessed on as well to prevent them from coming off during a collision.
  • Roof Flaps - Roof flaps help create downward force if a sport vehicle gains too much momentum and aerodynamics. To prevent the drag car from lifting off the ground, roof flaps may temporarily lift up.
  • Racing Tires - Special tires are required for high performance race vehicles. To enhance traction and control, smoother, wider surfaces are most desirable.
  • Spoiler - A spoiler works similarly to a roof flap, but it located on the rear of the car. Spoilers are also popular as a non-functional accessory for passenger cars.
  • Sway Bar - A sway bar is a piece of equipment that is installed within the car's chassis to counteract any momentum that may cause the automobile to flip.
