Automobile Restorations Terms to Know

Automobile restoration and repair is a massive industry at this point. After all, there are many owners of classic cars, antique trucks, and old vehicles that require some replacement parts and restoration services. This can include custom paint jobs, new brakes, replacement windshields, or even a new transmission. It just depends on the motor vehicle and the damage done to the body and engine over the years. Listed below are some helpful terms regarding automobile restoration and classic car repairs.

  • Channeled – This typically refers to a hot rod that has had its body loosened from the chassis, and then lowered down over the vehicle’s frame. The purpose of this is to make the car sit lower, but without making changes to the body lines of the car.
  • Chalking – A common term used by auto repair and restoration shops and mechanics, this refers to fading paint on a classic motor vehicle. A powdering occurs when the paint job is not properly maintained and cared for, and then a custom paint job is often needed for full restoration.
  • Hot Tanking – A process that involves removing corrosion or paint from any metal parts on the car or truck. This typically involves dipping the vehicle parts in a large tank of hot, caustic liquid, which contains chemicals.
  • Jet Coating – This is a hot, ceramic coating that is applied to the components of a vehicle’s exhaust system and engine. It is applied when the parts are hot, and helps improve the appearance and durability of the engine and exhaust components.
  • Spot Weld – A small, round weld mark that is made by the welding machine when two car or vehicle panels are welded together. This is often seen, but is typically painted over.

Automobile restorations can bring classic cars back to life. Specialized mechanics assess the damage and help determine what parts of the body will need to be replaced. Restorations can also be done when a car has been in an accident and the owner wants to fix it up instead of buy a new car. Owners can visit different body shops to ask what type of restoration services they offer. Insurance companies may hire a mechanic they trust to look at any damage that has occurred due to an accident. If the insurance adjuster agrees to pay for the restoration, the mechanic will order anything that is needed to be replaced. Classic cars that have damage to the body or interior can be fixed up to look like new for those who enjoy restoring old cars as a hobby. Many body shops provide automobile restoration services for any type of car. They can replace the engine, transmission, fix the brakes or suspension, or remove rust that is damaging the paint job with the proper tools. Finding a new steering wheel, or glass to replace a windshield or window, may be needed to finish the job. Body shops can sometimes find a used part that doesn't cost as much as it would if it were new. Restoration services for antique cars can require a lot of hunting down to find a part that will work with the type of car. Customers will be kept up to date on how far along their car is in the process and when they could expect to have the car back at home. Mechanics can change certain parts of the automobile to customize the look and feel for the driver.
