Transmission Repair Terms for the Non-Mechanic

Taking an automobile in for repairs is a very intimidating experience for most people. Even highly educated adults may know almost nothing about modern automobiles. When that mechanic starts talking about complicated transmission repairs, it's as if he's speaking a foreign language. But knowing the following terms will help auto repair novices follow what their mechanic is talking about.

  • Clutch - Pulls the engine and the transmission apart so that the driver can change gears. It then reconnects the two systems in a new gear configuration. Clutches are only used in manual vehicles.
  • Gasket - Gaskets are used to seal any area where there is a potential for transmission fluid leaks. The gasket is a relatively simple, cheap auto part that, when blown, can cause result in very expensive repairs.
  • Hydraulic System - This complicated series of hoses regulates the flow of transmission fluid throughout the transmission. The fluid in the hydraulic system controls both lubrication and pressure in the transmission. In fact, almost every part of the transmission is either submerged in fluid, or surrounded fluid filled packs.
  • Torque Converter - Used in vehicles with automatic transmissions, this device performs basically the same function as a clutch. It regulates power between the engine and the drive shaft and ensures that the wheels and drive shaft are spinning at the proper number of revolutions per minute.
  • Transmission - This device is a sort of power regulator that controls how much energy is moved between the engine and the drive shaft. In a manual transmission vehicle, this function is controlled by the clutch. In an automatic transmission vehicle, this work is regulated by microprocessors and other computer components.

Transmissions are essential to the proper workings of an automobile. Both manual and automatic transmissions can require repair at some point, usually after thousands of miles of use. In addition to repair, transmissions may need to be replaced, along with other related parts, such as stick shifts, clutches, and gears. Slipping is one indicator the transmission may need repairing; shuddering, jerking, and clunking are other signs. Or, when the stick shift does not move easily, it's time to look into this problem. Whether your transmission needs a complete overhaul, a new engine or motor, or a simple part replacement, a qualified mechanic is the one you should turn to. If you are handy under the hood of the car, you may be able to read up on DIY manuals online, but if not, it's best to leave this job up to the pros. They can install new housing components, fix leaks, provide maintenance, change the oil, and troubleshoot any and all problems that may be occurring with your car's transmission. The transmission is an important mechanism within a vehicle that transmits power to the automobile's wheels. Sometimes, there's a fluid leak, or perhaps the filter is clogged and needs to be replaced. Car and truck owners can head to the dealership where they bought the vehicle to have it fixed. Or, they can hire a local mechanic at an auto repair shop to handle the job. There are also automatic transmission rebuild kits available online if you're the handy type and want to consult online manuals. Car owners can go online for more information or ask their existing mechanic if he or she handles transmission repair. Some specialize in this area specifically, so look out for those types of shops.
