Terms to Know About Automobile Wrecking and Salvage

When a car is broken beyond repair it can be in the owner’s best interest to simply get rid of the vehicle by sending it to a junkyard. Junkyards haul away damaged and used vehicles for locals in the community. At this point the cars are salvaged for parts that can be useful or else they are crushed as garbage. Here are some terms to know about automobile wrecking and salvage.

  • Dismantling – When a scrapyard picks up a new vehicle they often begin the process of dismantling. This includes salvaging any parts such as windshield, hubcaps, mirrors, exhaust systems and more that are still in a condition to be used, recycled or sold.
  • Hammer Mill – A hammer mill is a large machine which crushes cars that have no more working parts. The hammer mill turns a wrecked car into small baseball sized chunks of metal.
  • C.A.R. – This stands for certified automotive recycler and proves a scrapyard adheres to environmental, safety and good business practices.
  • Totaled – A car is labeled as totaled when it is so wrecked that it will cost more to repair the car than to sell it. In this situation is common to have the car dismantled, scrapped and sold for parts.
  • Remanufactured – Some junkyards repair scrap parts to new condition. This process is known as remanufacturing and often times the parts are auctioned off, donated or sold. Auctions at yards provide opportunities for people to purchase parts at a cheap price.
  • Fluid Recovery – Automobiles use fluid such as oil and more that are not safe for the environment. Junkyards must safely remove dangerous fluids from wrecked cars, a process known as fluid recovery.

If you regularly purchase cars, trucks, and other vehicles, there's a good chance you might have a broken down automobile stashed somewhere in your garage, or elsewhere on your property. If this is the case, you might want to consider approaching an automobile wreckage and salvage expert. These experts can help you take apart and dismantled all of your used vehicles. You can then sell them the parts they deem most valuable. You can sell them, for instance, hubcaps, wheels, and tires. You can also sell them old engines. You can sell them just about any part or piece of equipment attached to your old automobile. You can also sell less costly parts and pieces of equipment off as scrap metal. Wrecking and salvage experts are always in need of scrap metal. Selling your car to one of these experts is often better for you, in the long run, than selling it to an auction house or wholesale dealer. Auction houses and wholesale dealers are notoriously cheap, and you won't be likely to fetch a fair price on your vehicle from either of them. Selling your car to one of these experts will also be better for you, financially, than simply choosing to donate it to a junk yard or scrap yard to be crushed and thrown away. So the next time you wonder what to do with that used car or truck of yours, consider taking it to one of these wrecking and salvage experts. Odds are, you'll be glad you did!
