Prevalent Terms for Awnings & Canopies

An awning or canopy is used as a covering that either attaches to a home, above a window or door, or stands above a patio to provide shade and cover from the sun or poor weather conditions. The material used for an awning or canopy is usually manufactured of mesh, though there are many different types made from canvas and other such fabrics. These outdoor covers can often retract, to get shorter or taller, depending on its. The tent can be used to cover RVs, boats, or to cover a carport at home. Aluminum and light metal framing makes portable canopies an easy job to move. Other forms of canopies are gazebos and pergolas, though they are often used in more formal settings than as a shelter for a patio or motor vehicle. There are a number of terms that may help a person choose what sort of shelter they need, whether it is an awning or canopy.

  • Pergola - Pergola’s are garden features that provide shade for walkways, passageways and sitting areas. It is held up by vertical posts supporting cross-beams all enmeshed and tangled with vines.
  • Gazebo - This is a pavilion structure often found in parks, gardens and spacious public areas. They are freestanding, roofed structures that are open on all sides. These shelters can keep our rain or sun and are seen as custom shelters that are sometimes large enough to house a great many people.
  • Aluminum Awnings - Usually used in residential settings, these type of awnings are often set before a door or window, providing cooler temperatures indoors as well as shade for the deck or porch. They can also extend the life of lawn furniture and window treatments by cutting down on direct sunlight.

Awnings and canopies are used in many different ways and for a multitude of uses. In fact, you may find them used on garden pergolas, outdoor gazebos and even home patios. As you probably know, an awning is a sheet of canvas material that is stretched over a frame of some sort. Typically awnings and canopies are used to provide shade or cover from the sun. Often they are used on store or shop fronts, as well as patio tables and RVs. They often have metal frames that hold the mesh or canvas material in place. Nowadays there are many types, shapes, sizes and colors of awnings. For instance, one type is generally made from thick canvas fabric and used on carports. There are also retractable umbrella canopies that are used at the beach. These are small and portable and can be easily carried and set up by hand. Many residential home porches and decks have canopy covers as well. This way when you sit outdoors, you have some shelter from sunlight and rain. It is common to see awnings above the doors and windows of businesses. Many of these are custom made from metals like aluminum, which hold up well in the weather. Even some recreational boats have awnings to provide shade from the sun. If you visit a local home improvement store or center, you can easily learn more about canopy covers and awnings used on patios, tents, gazebos and pergolas. You can even speak with a store employee about different materials used to manufacture these fabric covers.
