Key Barbecuing Terms

Outdoor cooking is a culinary specialty and involves a lot more than just your basic BBQ grill. Here are some terms with which to become familiar if you're thinking of expanding your gas or charcoal grill.

  • Smoker - There are many different models of smokers on the market today. Some smokers are charcoal based and can attach to the side of your existing grill. Other models are more portable and use electricity rather than briquettes. Digital technology is available as well for monitoring meat as it smokes.
  • Rotisserie - A rotisserie is an electric cooking device that holds meat on a spit. The spit then continually and constantly rotates over the heat source for even cooking.
  • Fire Pits - A fire pit is any type of metal container that is used in grassy areas to safely contain fire. They can be used for roasting marshmallows or hot dogs from a stick.
  • Hibachi - A hibachi can refer to a variety of cooking devices. Traditionally, it's a container that holds charcoal for cooking. Modern usage also refers to flat, gas or electric powered cooktops.
  • Pulled Meat - Cooking pork, chicken, or beef over low heat for several hours creates a very tender final product. The meat can then be shredded, or pulled apart, with a fork.
  • Rub - A rub is a mix of spices and seasonings that is literally rubbed onto the meat during cooking. It's often blackened in the process and produces intense flavoring.
  • Brine - Mixing water with salt creates brine. Placing rotisserie or barbecue bound chicken in brine before cooking creates great flavor.
  • Brisket - Brisket is a cut of beef that is often cooked with a barbecue and BBQ sauce. Brisket is often cooked slowly for a moist cut.

A barbecue is typically an outdoor gathering or meal with one or more forms of meat that are cooked on a grill. These types of lunches and dinners have been taking place since the late 1800s. It is common for modern barbecues to involve all kinds of beef, chicken, vegetables, and pork products. This type of gathering can involve only family members, or it can involve fellow work employees, or friends and neighbors as well. As you likely know, barbecue food supplies can be found in grocery stores and super-centers across the United States. In fact, these supplies and accessories become more prevalent when summer arrives each year. While some people choose to barbecue with a modern propane gas grill, others prefer charcoal grilling with briquettes and lighter fluid. The very first outdoor barbecues were simply done with fire pits. All of these methods are great ways to cook beef ribs, BBQ chicken, hamburgers, and pork hotdogs. Typically, when people barbecue for lunch or dinner events, they use BBQ sauce, which is a tangy rich sauce used for seasoning meats. Some restaurants even cater to customers by offering BBQ meals indoors at any time or season. To learn more about home barbecuing, great recipes for cooking meat, and where to purchase a gas grill, surf the internet. It does not matter what party or outdoor event you are planning for; there is plenty of information and advice pertaining to barbecues online. You can even find free recipes for preparing pork ribs, beef steaks, and bratwurst on the grill.
