Important Barbecue Equipment and Supplies Terms

There are millions of Americans that barbecue and grill outdoors every year. This fun tradition requires certain equipment, BBQ supplies, and meats. While some people still use a charcoal grill, many others have switched to an electric or gas unit. There are also meat smoking supplies or units that can be utilized. It really just depends on personal preference. Here you will find some useful terms and definitions to expand your knowledge of barbecue equipment and grilling supplies.

  • Cold Smoking – This is when smoke is applied to food. The smoke is between 90 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and can be used to flavor meats, cheese, and fish. This is a delicate process because dangerous microbes can form if the temperature is off.
  • Planking – A combination cooking method for preparing meats like salmon. A cedar wood plank is often used for its aroma, but is soaked in water beforehand. The meat is simply placed on the plank, and then in a closed oven. Steam and flavor are then delivered into the meat while it cooks.
  • Whitebone – This refers to ribs when they are overcooked in an oven, pit, or grill. When the ribs are pulled apart, and the meat pulls completely off of one bone, leaving it white, the meat was cooked too long.
  • Texas Rub – A seasoning mixture that is made from only salt and pepper. It is typically added to meat like beef or pork, but without a heavy BBQ sauce.
  • Smoke Ring – A pinkish ribbon of color that appears on the edges of meats. This is commonly seen when you barbecue outdoors on a charcoal or gas grill. A smoke ring is often seen in meats that are properly smoked, roasted or grilled.

Barbecuing is primarily a summertime activity, but can be done most any time of the year. Barbecue, which comprises a grill, pit, or outdoor fireplace, is used for roasting meat, such as chicken, beef tips, hamburgers, and hot dogs. Many people like to have barbecues at cookouts, large gatherings of friends and family in one place. Backyard barbecues are fun, as are ones on the beach and in the woods at campgrounds. They all involve smoke, grills, and good times. Proper accessories are required to make an outdoor barbecue a success. Consumers can purchase barbecue equipment and supplies from wholesalers that specialize in this type of equipment. So what do you need? First and foremost, you'll need a grill of some type. Whether you like charcoal, electric or an open fire wood pit, the grill is the main staple of the barbecue, or BB for short. You'll also need tools such as spatulas and tongs. Other accessories include racks, lighters, cleaners, baskets, and gas grill covers. Cooks may also need aprons, barbecue sauce, platters, and oven mitts. Wholesalers may also sell plates, silverware, small portable grills, thermometers, and propane. All of these come in handy for parties, camping, tailgating, and other events. Wholesalers typically offer bulk discounts, so the more you buy, the more you save. It can be convenient to stock up on bulk BBQ items like propane, accessories, spare parts, food, and brushes. Some barbecue equipment and supplies wholesalers sell barbecue sauce and other condiments that go on he meat, such as gourmet dry rubs, ketchup, seasonings, herbs, and spray glazes. Others sell just grills, such as electric and gas. Still others cater to the serious cook and offer only the best in stainless steel grill systems for commercial or even residential use.
