Maybe you want a night of downtown fun singing karaoke. Perhaps you’d rather park on a pub stool for an after-work glass of wine and a treat from the grill. Whatever your poison, here are some of the many manifestations of bars, taverns and cocktail lounges.
Afterhours club – Due to legal curfews, establishments can't sell alcohol or even stay open past certain hours. Afterhours clubs have special licenses to do so anyway. In Europe, these are called “Music and Dance” licenses. You will normally pay a high door fee to get in, and expect a dance party complete with a DJ playing rap, disco and techno music.
Dive bar - In the 1800’s, dive bars were illegal underground places to drink. These days, the phrase “dive bar” brings to mind cheap beer on tap, a community of regulars, karaoke nights, jukeboxes, graffiti-laden bathrooms and a general lack of pretension.
Pool hall – The green felt on billiards tables is meant to resemble grass since the game was originally played croquet-style on a lawn. Pool halls are popular among college students and professional billiard players.
Martini lounge – The classic martini is simply gin and vermouth in a martini glass, nothing more, nothing less. These days, martini lounges may serve anything from espresso and blue agave martinis to the now-famous Cosmopolitan. These lounges typically offer a relaxed, upscale atmosphere and jazz or piano music.
Microbrewery – Microbreweries are artisan taverns that brew their own specialty beers. Lagers, pilsners and wheat beers are popular forms of microbrews.
Sports bar – A sports bars is a place to go for a night of sports on big screens, chicken wings from the grill, and affable cocktail servers. Some sports bars have theater-style seating, and others will include sporty cocktails, such as the Lagasse's Stadium’s “Slam Dunk.”
