Beds Defined

Some beds are foam, some are water. Most provide good support. One thing is for sure, we all need a good bed! If you're small, a twin or full bed may be suitable. If you're a kid, there's nothing more exciting than a bunk bed. Deciding on which bed to choose is difficult, but with the right tools, you can make a very informed decision. Keep in mind that headboards, frames and mattresses are not often sold as a set. Also, not every bed offers the same amount of support.

  • King, Queen, Full, Twin - These are all mattress sizes. There are two types of king beds: a California King and a Standard King. A California King will be longer than it is wide, whereas the Standard King is more square. The smaller the mattress the cheaper it may be.
  • Frame - This is what your mattress will rest upon. Usually frames are made of metal, but some are built as a platform to support just a mattress. With a frame you almost always have to have a box-spring for the mattress. Most bed makers will sell matching canopies and headboards with their frames.
  • Trundle, Bunk, Toddler - These are all mainly child versions of beds. You can put nearly any type of mattress on these beds, from air to pillows. The warehouse in which these are built is usually a good sign of how sturdy they'll be.
  • Sofa and Futon - These are beds, but double as sitting, couch furniture. A futon is a folded up mattress when acting as a couch and a sofa bed hides itself inside the couch. These are good for people in lofts who don't have a lot of room.

The earliest beds, as we would think of them today, were stone slabs that were used by Neolithic man. Real beds seem to have first appeared in Egypt in the Bronze Age, with wooden frameworks supporting a woven platform on which a mattress could be placed. Modern beds come in a variety of designs and sizes. Beds designed for a single person are generally referred to as twin. Larger ones come in full, king, and queen. Bunk beds are popular with children and used in situations where space is a premium. Trends vary. Canopy or four poster beds tend to go in and out of popularity. Headboards are often chosen to match the decoration of the rest of the room. The current trend is for platform designs rather than box frame. Temporary sleeping arrangements are important. Futons and sofa beds are popular. Trundle beds, which fit under a fixed bed for storage, are seen less, perhaps due to the fact that they can't double as another piece of furniture. Murphy beds, which fold up into the wall, are extremely unusual, but are sometimes seen in hotels. Another space saver sometimes used is the loft. Unlike bunk beds, which are placed on top of one another, the loft design places other things underneath, such as a desk and work area. These are common in college dorms. Special beds are made for young children. Baby cribs and toddler beds are both important. Often, people seek cheap furniture for children, as they grow out of it rapidly. Retail stores also sell bedroom furniture, including full sets, and mattresses, including water and air. Mattresses are made in spring and foam designs. Pillows are also important. Due to the size of the product, most stores are warehouse or big box stores.
