Common Beer and Ale Retail Terms

Whether someone wants to have a nice cold one after work or socialize with friends, beer is a tasty drink enjoyed by many as a nice way to unwind and have a good time. Retail imports are often more expensive than domestic brews. While one person will want a light beer from a bottle, others may prefer a dark, stout beer poured. Visiting the local pub is always an option, but many people also like to relax at home with a beer. Depending on each drinkers' preference, beer ranges from dry and bitter to sweet and fruity. Heavier beers, like a stout or porter, are generally darker in color and light beers are generally referred to as a lager, ale or amber brew. Below are some common terms related to the retail beer and ale industry.

  • Ale - Ales are made with top fermenting yeast and may absorb some of the byproducts during the fermentation process. This will give the beer additional flavor.
  • Fermentation - Fermentation is the reaction of sugars being converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide from yeast.
  • Hops - Hops is the female flower that is used in the brewing process. Hops is responsible for the bitterness in beer.
  • Lagers - Lagers feature bottom fermenting yeast and is fermented at lower temperatures. Lager takes longer to ferment when compared to ales, and this process results in a cleaner and crisper taste.
  • Malt - Malt is one of the main ingredients in beer and is a type of barley that has been germinated in water and then heat dried. The type of barley and drying temperature factors into the taste.
  • Ginger Beer - Ginger beer is a non-alcoholic, carbonated drink that features ginger and artificial sweeteners that give it flavor.

Beer and ale are popular pub drinks. Many people choose a frothy glass of this fermented alcoholic drink to accompany their game watching, or just meeting with friends. Beer is brewed from malt and flavored with hops, while ale is somewhat heavier than beer. These beverages can come packaged in bottles, cans, or kegs, available at retail liquor stores. Beer, which contains barley malt, fills several aisles within retail liquor stores. Some grocery stores also sell beer, depending on the state. You’ll find a wide variety of choices when visiting such a store, from wheat and stout to pale ale. You can even buy the ingredients and equipment to craft your own home brew. Whether your passion is dry lager, light beer, porter, stout, or pale ale, you’re sure to find what you need within a beer and ale retail shop. Most liquor stores feature cheap sales and deals on a regular basis for both imports and domestics. Perhaps you like a strong amber ale, or maybe you’d prefer to go with a Hefeweizen instead, which is unfiltered wheat beer. Order a draught or draft beer in a pub, or pick up a pack for drinking games. Beer dates back to the sixth millennium BC, making it one of the oldest alcoholic beverages the planet has seen. Modern beer is made with barley, hops, and malt. One brewery may have several locations, while another may be a small local microbrewery. From weak to strong, beer and ale is available in many different combinations. Try dark Belgian beer, lager, bock, dry, or porter. Some are higher in calories than others, depending on content.
