  • Cruiser – Cruisers are most commonly used on and near beaches. This style has “balloon” tires that provide a comfortable ride on sand or pavement with just one speed for the rider's comfort. The framing is not designed to take the abuse that comes from riding on rough dirt trails.
  • Frame – Bicycles come with two main frame options. The men's model has a supportive bar that stretches from the handle area to the back tire. The women's model doesn't use that bar making it easier for women to get on and off the equipment. Ask the shop owner how much weight the model supports so if you carry gear, the excess weight doesn't damage the tires or rims.
  • Gears – Cruisers don't tend to have the gears that 10-speed, 12-speed or mountain bikes have. The gears make it easy for riders to drop to lower gears while pedaling up steep slopes.
  • Wheels – Wheels play an important factor in comfort. Beach cruisers have tires with extra air to provide cushioning during the ride. Mountain bikes have thicker tires with deep treads for riding through dirt and mud. 10- and 12-speeds have very narrow tires making them great for races.
