Billiard Parlors
Playing billiards, or pool as it is commonly called, is a fun way to spend an evening with friends. Billiard parlors or pool halls are establishments where this popular game is played. Customers can pay by the game, or reserve a table for the night as part of a party. Such parlors usually serve food and drinks, with lunch and dinner menus featuring appetizers and entrées. Billiard parlors may also feature a video game room, with tables all around, and a bar area that sells alcohol. Most play music as well. These social, recreational outlets provide a space for friends to gather and have fun. Sometimes there are tournaments going on, with winners receiving prizes and bragging rights. Derived from the French word of the same game, billiards got its start resembling the lawn game of croquet. Over the years, the game evolved to an indoor table game, involving balls and wooden sticks called maces. You'll notice that most pool tables feature green felt; this is because it was originally supposed to resemble grass. The borders of the table were called banks, meant to resemble the banks of a river. The history of billiards is an interesting one — one that has evolved many times over the years. Everyone has house rules, although there are certain rule guides to be followed for the game of pool. Every billiard parlor, pool hall, or club features a few of the same basic supplies: cue sticks, multi-colored balls, tables, and racks. Members of the public can attend a pool hall to socialize, shoot some pool, grab a drink at the bar, hold a private party, or enjoy some tasty treats at a nearby table.
