Popular Boiler Supplies and Parts Terms

Boilers have been a popular heating source for over a century. Though not as common as they were decades ago, many older buildings and homes still use a boiler to heat their homes and businesses. In order to have a better, more comprehensive understanding of the parts, supplies, and plumbing available on the market today, it is important to understand the terminology associated with this type of heating system. Below are several terms to be familiar with when researching boiler parts and supplies.

  • Boiler - A sealed tank where water is heated and turned to steam for power or hot water. The steam or water is then carried through plumbing or a series of tubes or pipes.
  • Accumulator - A pressure vessel containing water and or steam, which is used to store the heat of steam for use at a late period and at some lower pressure.
  • Blow Down Valve - A valve generally used to continuously regulate concentration of solids in the boiler, not a drain valve. Often called continuous blow down.
  • Condensate - Condensed water resulting from the removal of latent heat from steam.
  • Furnace - A furnace is an enclosed chamber in which heat is produced to generate steam, destroy refuse, smelt or refine ores, etc. In more general terms, a furnace is a heating system popular in many homes and businesses.
  • Gasket - A rubber, metal, or rope ring, for packing a piston or placing around a joint to make it watertight.
  • Spalling - The breaking off of the surface of refractory material as a result of internal stresses.
  • Dew Point - The temperature at which condensation begins.
