Types of Bolts and Nuts

Bolts and nuts in a variety of types and sizes are necessary for anything from machinery to construction equipment to automobiles. From screws and washers to fasteners and rivets, these supplies are available at home improvement stores or online. Buy in bulk from wholesalers to get lots of supplies, like hex bolts and anchors, at once. They come in many different durable materials, such as stainless steel, chrome, aluminum, and brass, used in conjunction with wood or cables. Check out these top terms for bolts and nuts.

  • Screw Threads – Helical structures that switch between rotational and linear movement. The ridge wraps around a helix shaped cylinder or cone, called a straight thread and tapered thread, respectively.
  • U bolts – Metal fixings that resemble the letter U in shape, featuring a pin or screw bolt closure that ensures a closed clamp.
  • Lock Nuts – A type of nut that fits into a piece of pipe and screws onto another pipe, joining the two.
  • Carriage Bolts – Large bolts featuring a round head, used in applying wooden panels.
  • Lag Bolts – Driven in with a wrench, these heavy woodscrews feature a square or hexagonal head.
  • Cap Screws – Threaded screws that fasten and join parts in construction and machine design, secured with screw threads.
  • Flange – A rim or collar that juts out on a wheel or pipe, with the main purpose of strengthening an object in place or to another object.
  • Rivets – Metal bolts or pins that hold two metal plates together. They are inserted through aligned holes and hammered on one end to make a second head.
  • Eye bolts – Used to attach cables, eye bolts are screws with a loop on one end and threads on the other.

Nuts and bolts come in a variety of types and sizes. Other fasteners such as screws and rivets are often sold alongside them. Fasteners also include washers and other plumbing supplies. Most are made of metal. Wooden pegs are used by carpenters and in constructing all wood buildings. Plastic screws may sometimes be used. The metals used are most often stainless steel, aluminum or brass. Chrome plating is sometimes used when a fastener is highly visible. Nuts are generally tightened onto their bolts using a socket wrench. Some may be hand tightened. This type of nut generally has wings. The most common kind of nut is the hex nut, with a six sided shape. Square nuts are also found, as are ones with flanges. Cap nuts have domed tops, and are sometimes used for appearance. Although nuts are sometimes hand tightened, tools are generally used to provide extra torque and secure them more thoroughly. There are also various kinds of bolts including eye bolts and anchor bolts. Most bolts have a 'male' thread, with the thread on the outside. Rarely a 'female' thread, on the inside of the bolt, is used in conjunction with a second bolt or screw. Eye bolts are often used to run rope for lifting items. Nuts and bolts are generally intended for purposes where the fastener needs to be relatively easily undone. Permanent fastening is generally done with rivets. It is also possible to lock a nut to a bolt by various means, some of which are permanent. Nuts and bolts may be measured in Imperial or metric sizes. Some are made for very specific purposes, such as connecting rod bolts found in car engines. Carriage bolts and lag bolts are generally used to secure wood. Most nuts, bolts and fasteners are machine made.
