Popular Bookbinders Terms

Bookbinding is a craft that uses several techniques to make the types of bindings that clients need. In some cases, this includes simple three ring binders that protect documents. Other bookbinding protects, however, can include leather covers with artistic images. Learning about some of the key terms that bookbinders use should help you choose an option that meets your needs well.

  • Coptic Binding - Coptic bindings sew folded pages to each other with a chain stitch that holds them in place. This binding method was first developed in the second Century AD by a Christian sect in Egypt. The method was used widely until the 11th Century. Some bookbinders still specialize in this craft, but it is not the most pervasive format.
  • Nag Hammadi Binding - Coptic binding stitches several sections of a book together. Nag Hammadi binding is a simplified version used to hold a single section together rather than linking it with other parts to form a longer book.
  • Case Binding - This is the most common method used to make hardcover books. This method glues printed pages together into a section known as a text block. The text blocks are then attached to the cover, or case, with pieces of paper or cloth.
  • Spiral Binding - Spiral binding is an expensive way of linking printed pages together with a system of connected rings. Bound atlases and art books often use spiral binding because it allows the reader to fold the pages over without causing damage to the book's spine. The spiral bindsings are often made of plastic or wire.

A lot just depends on the thesis journal, medical textbook, or fiction novel they are working with. Since there are bookbinders located all over the United States, there may be one located near you.
