Bowling Apparel and Accessories Terms to Know

Whether someone bowls on a regular basis or periodically, they will need certain equipment and specific apparel when joining a league. One accessory that regular bowlers often use is a wrist guard to prevent injury. After joining a league, teams may have custom shirts made to have fun and present unity. Besides the ball, another accessory that all bowlers need are the right shoes. Bowling centers may have a store where bowlers can purchase this merchandise.

  • Bowling Shirt - Bowling shirts have a very distinct look and are loose fitting, buttoned shirts that are often short sleeved. The fabrics and color will vary, but they can be custom made to feature certain designs. More expensive apparel may be made of silk.
  • Embroidery - An embroidery is a logo or monogram that is located on the left breast and back of a bowling shirt. While the left breast area may feature the bowler's name, the back of the shirt will have the team logo.
  • Bowling Shoes - Bowling shoes are specialized shoes that have a rubbery sole on the bottom of one shoe and a harder sole on the other one that allows bowlers to slide when taking their last step.
  • Tandem - Tandem is a name that describes when after a first roll, two pins are located one behind the other. Other names for this situation include bicycle, sleeper and one in the dark.
  • Weight Block - The weight block is the area where the bowling bowl is drilled. From the top of the ball to the bottom, there may be a three ounce difference. Where finger holes are located depend on the bowler, some prefer less top weight to delay the hook until the very end.
