Bowling Apparel and Accessories Terms to Know

Whether someone bowls on a regular basis or periodically, they will need certain equipment and specific apparel when joining a league. One accessory that regular bowlers often use is a wrist guard to prevent injury. After joining a league, teams may have custom shirts made to have fun and present unity. Besides the ball, another accessory that all bowlers need are the right shoes. Bowling centers may have a store where bowlers can purchase this merchandise.

  • Bowling Shirt - Bowling shirts have a very distinct look and are loose fitting, buttoned shirts that are often short sleeved. The fabrics and color will vary, but they can be custom made to feature certain designs. More expensive apparel may be made of silk.
  • Embroidery - An embroidery is a logo or monogram that is located on the left breast and back of a bowling shirt. While the left breast area may feature the bowler's name, the back of the shirt will have the team logo.
  • Bowling Shoes - Bowling shoes are specialized shoes that have a rubbery sole on the bottom of one shoe and a harder sole on the other one that allows bowlers to slide when taking their last step.
  • Tandem - Tandem is a name that describes when after a first roll, two pins are located one behind the other. Other names for this situation include bicycle, sleeper and one in the dark.
  • Weight Block - The weight block is the area where the bowling bowl is drilled. From the top of the ball to the bottom, there may be a three ounce difference. Where finger holes are located depend on the bowler, some prefer less top weight to delay the hook until the very end.

Bowling enthusiasts need to be properly outfitted for playing in their sport, so they often buy from apparel and accessories retailers and wholesalers. Bowling is a sport that involves rolling a ball down a long alley or lane to strike a set of 10 pins. The object of the game is to knock down as many pins as possible with one roll. Bowling balls come in various weights, from just a few pounds to up to 20 pounds. Candlepin balls can fit in the palm of your hand, while 10-pin bowling balls usually feature larger finger holes. Bowling balls are made of urethane, plastic, and resin, featuring a core made of varying materials. The very first bowling balls were made from wood, then rubber, then to the plastic and even epoxy we see today. Bowling apparel and accessories can include anything from shoes and bags to shirts and hand totes. Bowler's tape, hand towels, wrist supports, equipment, and promotional merchandise are also available. Clothing may come in a variety of sizes for both children and adults, as do shoes which also come in a variety of sizes to suit any needs. To find bowling apparel and accessories, customers can head to their local bowling alley or sports apparel store to purchase accessories such as bags along with equipment and apparel, like shoes and uniforms. Even online web sites have plenty of apparel and accessories to choose from, often with free or discounted shipping. Bowling apparel and accessory providers may also sell merchandise combos and provide specials, closeouts, and exclusive offers. Some wholesalers offer discounts when buying in bulk.
