Popular Wiring for Voice and Daya Systems Terms

Data communications systems require extensive infrastructure. The availability of different types of systems may depend upon whether the necessary infrastructure is in place. Understanding the different types of systems and equipment is important for consumers who are selecting a network. Familiarity with common terminology can assist in understanding the options available.

  • Point to Point Communication - Systems which transmit signals directly from a transmitter to a receiver. A cable must be installed between the two devices. Telephone lines transmitting voice information are a point to point communication system.
  • Broadcast Communication - Systems which transmit signals from a powerful transmitter to multiple receivers. These systems do not utilize cables between the transmitter and receiver. Radios utilize broadcast communication.
  • Fiber Optic Cable - Also called optical fiber cable. A type of cable which uses infrared light to transmit data and information. These work at very high speeds over long distances. Installing and laying new fiber optic cable outdoors can be expensive, but many networks have been intentionally overbuilt to allow for unused bandwidth to be leased to other companies.
  • Twisted Pair Cable - Cabling used for transmitting data over shorter distances. Ethernet cables are a type of twisted pair cable.
  • Coaxial Cable - A type of electromagnetic cable. It is typically used for transmitting voice or television signals. Future uses may include home networking and internet access.
  • Modular Connector - The jack used to plug a wire into a device. An ethernet cable, for example, is plugged into a modem or router with the modular connector. Different types of wires require different types of modular connectors.

Cable wire installation for equipment that transmits voice, data, and other types of information often requires the service of a professional. There are many different types of cable wire systems. Some wiring, for instance, is designed for television, phone, internet service, and varying types of communication. This makes it important to hire a professional who can work with the appropriate equipment for your system. Contractors will often advertise the specific services that they provide. If you have seen advertisements in your city about contractors who install voice, data, and TV cables, then you might want to start researching their names to help you decide which one can provide the best services. You can also talk to your friends and colleagues about professionals who have done work for them. After you have a few names, you will want to determine how effective each one really is at installing computer modem cables, answering services, VOIP, and other communication supplies. You can often do this by using the internet to find consumer forums where people in your area post reviews about the services that they have gotten from contractors. Having access to a wide variety of reviews can give you a balanced perspective with which to base your opinion. When you finally decide which electricians are right for you, be sure to find out whether they have business insurance that will protect you from liability damages. This is especially necessary if they are installing new router boxes or interior internet cabling that could damage your property.
