Camping Equipment Terms to Know

If you're looking for an inexpensive option for a family vacation, a camping trip may be just what the doctor ordered. Most beginners have no idea what to expect from a trip to the mountains and tend to go a little overboard buying camp equipment and supplies that they probably won't even use. There's also the possibility of buying high quality, high tech tents, sleeping bags and backpacks that work great, but are far too elaborate for a simple family outing. You probably won't need as much as you think, but if you think all you need is a backpack, sleeping bag and a knife, you might want to familiarize yourself with these common pieces of camping and outdoor equipment you'll need.

  • Pocket Knife - You'll probably need a good pocket knife and to use, with the multiple tools provided this is a great item. Go ahead and splurge on a high quality knife, you won't be sorry.
  • Fire Starters - It wouldn't be camping without a campfire, so be sure to bring plenty of wood, kindling and fire starting supplies. Just be certain to obey all campfire bans and pay attention. A small camp fire can get out of control before you know what's happened.
  • Tents - Unless you're traveling in a motor home, you'll want a good tent. Families who aren't camping in the winter can get away with large, cheap tents sold at big box retailers. If you're doing back country camping, you might want something that's rated to cooler temperatures.
  • Portable Stove - For those who decide not to have a fire in the great outdoors then a portable stove if for you. Usually running off of propane or even electricity, it is a safe and effective tool to prepare food.

Camping enthusiasts have a love for the great outdoors. But they need the proper supplies and equipment to go out. Sleeping bags, flashlights, blankets, backpacks, and first aid kits are all supplies that campers need to spend time at a campground. Some people prefer to rough it and stay in tents when they camp, while others like to travel in style with RVs. Camping—the act of sleeping in a tent, trailer or cabin in the woods—can be a fun way to spend a vacation, either for a night or a week, or even more. It's also typically cheaper than staying in a hotel. People have been camping recreationally for years, especially with the advent of national parks within the last century or so. National parks provide the public with access to natural wonders, brimming with wildlife, lakes, and mountains. Campgrounds are popular places to be during the warm weather. They offer playgrounds, family activities, pools, campfires, and more. Those who like to go for hikes will need insulated beverage containers, backpacks, flashlights, and first aid supply equipment. Those who love to grill, cook, or picnic will need to buy baskets, blankets, portable stoves, matches, and coal. Many campsites feature picnic tables where families can gather to eat their hot dogs and hamburgers. Portable stoves are a good investment for the serious camper, especially for use within a camper or RV. Fire pits are also a typical fixture at campsites, allowing kids and adults alike to roast their marshmallows. You may need a knife, sleeping bag, flashlight, cooler, and even wood for your fire. You can stock up on these items at an outdoor outlet beforehand, or pick up some essentials at campground convenience shops. Most campgrounds sell the basics, such as snacks, drinks, ice, bug spray, and firewood.
