These days there are all kinds of boot camps, summer camps, and sports camps to suit different needs and interests. While some only last a single day, others are for an entire summer. A few of the different types of camps offered for children and teenagers are basketball, band, Christian youth, cheerleading, football, and nature. In other words, there are athletic programs and sleepaway adventures to please most people. Below, you will find a list of helpful terms that can assist you with better understanding academic camps, summer programs, and long-term sports activities for kids.

  • Music or Band Camp – This is a type of program, which is typically for boys and girls in school band classes and it helps them excel with instruments and singing or performing.
  • Sports Camp – Typically a summer athletic program for activities like soccer, tennis, basketball, or football.
  • Performing Arts Program – A single-day or several week program that involves learning anything from dance, to theater arts, to singing.
  • Counselor – This is a type of chaperone, guide, or authority figure who works at camps to assist kids and teens with learning.
  • Summer Retreat – A relaxing getaway or summer-long boot camp that involves anything from horseback riding, to learning about nature, to exercise, to traveling with a group to see new things.
  • Sleepaway Camp – This is a type of retreat that takes place away from home for several weeks or months, and kids are typically expected to sleep overnight in bunks or cabins.
  • Christian Youth Group – This is a group of children or teenagers that partake in activities with their church and often travel to new places.

    If you are trying to decide on a summer camp for your kids, you have many options to choose from. With so many programs including day and sleepaway camp, there is one that will work for your needs. A day camp is one that your boy or girl attends during the afternoons, but sleeps at home. Most sleepaway programs involve traveling to a destination and staying overnight every night. When choosing which one is right for you, consider both your ability to drive your child to camp and his or her ability to be away from home. You can then pick a program. For example, there are many sports camps like basketball and football. There are even soccer, tennis and cheerleading ones for the athletic youngsters.
