Canoe Rental and Charter Terminology

If you want to travel along a river or other body of water, decide on what marine vessel is best for you. Consider a canoe, kayak, paddle boat, or other type of marine transportation for your needs. If you do not want to do the boating work yourself, consider hiring a charter company or renting the equipment. The following are important boating terms to be familiar with.

  • Canoe - Small, narrow boat that is human-powered by using oars to row. Some canoes have enough room for more than one occupant and are made from different materials like fiberglass and wood. They are used to fish on lakes, as well as for other recreational uses.
  • Kayak - Similar to a canoe, these narrow boats are manually propelled by means of a double blade paddle. The paddle, with oars on each side, make it easier to navigate rough waters in the ocean and river rapids. Single and double kayaks are both available. They are made from different composite materials such as carbon fiber, aluminum, and fiberglass.
  • Charter - Charter companies are ideal for those who do not want to drive or maintain the marine vessel. Chartering involves renting a vessel, and sometimes the crew like a captain, can help those who wish to take trips along rivers or lakes. Clubs and large teams may wish to hire experienced riders for their travel needs.
  • Launch Point - A position on the lake or river can be designated as the origin of the trip. Sometimes there will be old shops and depots around the area so that all can have adequate supplies for the boating activity.
