Important Carburetor Terminology

Whether you are looking to rebuild or exchange your existing carburetor or get a new one manufactured for your car or motorcycle, it is important to know a few important terms before you begin your shopping. A new carburetor will cost more, but may be more reliable and convenient. A rebuilt version, on the other hand, can be exchanged for your broken one fairly cheaply. Here are some of the most common carburetor terms and definitions.

  • Carburetor - Regardless of the type, size, or racing performance quality of the carburetor, its function is to mix fuel with air for an internal combustion engine. People can buy them new, but some choose to rebuild because it is cheaper.
  • Choke - The choke is a part of the carburetor that adjusts the amount of fuel sent into the venturi cylinder. When the engine is cold, more fuel is needed to get the engine started.
  • Float Chamber - The float chamber is the section of the carburetor that manages the intake of fuel. A valve maintains a steady level so the main chamber is not flooded.
  • Throttle Valve - The throttle valve is the governing part that automatically pulls the air mixed fuel from the carburetor as it is demanded by the gas pedal.
  • Venturi - The venturi, for both import and domestic models, is the main chamber of the carburetor where the air and fuel are actually mixed.
  • Catalytic Converter - Catalytic converters are manufactured and used on racing performance vehicles to reduce the toxic air emissions coming from the carburetor.

Carburetors are devices within internal combustion engines that produce a mixture of vaporized fuel and air. Invented in 1885, the carburetor is an essential part of a vehicle's engine. You can buy them new or used. The refurbished ones will cost less, but you'll still have to get them installed. If you have the training for it, you can do this yourself with carburetor kits. If not, you'll have to hire a skilled mechanic to install or repair your domestic or imported carburetor. Carburetors, which typically include parts like a choke, accelerator pump, air filter, power valve, and off-idle circuit, can be purchased at cheap prices from a wholesaler. Typically, wholesalers offer bulk discounts on items, which can come in handy for mechanics, dealerships, and auto makers who need many carburetors and related equipment at once. Carburetors, when working at their optimum capacity, can improve gas mileage and ensure more powerful starts. Catalytic conversion carburetors, invented in the mid-1900s and presented for widespread use in the 1970s, were created to reduce emissions toxicity from internal combustion engines. Consumers and mechanics can buy fuel injection systems, engine parts, and rebuild kits directly from the manufacturer, for use in motorcycles, trucks, cars, and other autos. Sometimes carburetors need adjustments, and this is where mechanics come in. For service, take your auto to an auto body repair shop or the dealership where you bought your truck or car. Choose someone skilled in engine, fuel injection system, and carburetor repair and parts replacement to perform these jobs, to ensure quality workmanship.
