Important Terms about Carpet Installation & Sales

Sooner or later, new carpet will have to be installed at your home due to wear and tear. If you've never had to do this before, you may be a little confused by the terminology used in the carpet installation business. So before you run out and spend money on that nice ceramic carpet, let's define some important words you may come across.

  • Carpet - A type of floor covering composed of natural or artificial fibers. Carpets are permanently affixed to the floor, and generally provide wall to wall coverage. Not to be confused with rugs, although many people use both terms interchangeably.
  • Rug - A portable type of floor covering. Unlike carpets, rugs are not permanently attached to the floor.
  • Fibers - The thin filaments, usually synthetic, that compose a carpet. Nylon is the most common substance, but others include polypropylene, acrylic, polyester, wool, and cotton.
  • Pile - The collection of fibers on a carpet, arranged in various designs and density levels.
  • Subfloor - The wooden surface below the carpet.
  • Tile - An alternative type of floor covering, tiles are small, hard slabs of various materials. Common types of tiles include porcelain, ceramic, and wood.
  • Floor mat - A broad term for a type of durable floor covering, often used to collect dirt from footwear or prevent pedestrian accidents.
  • Runner rugs - A type of rug placed in doorways, stairways, or other high-traffic spots. They are intended to protect the carpet or floor underneath from excessive wear.
  • Transition strip - Floor covering intended to join two spaces that have different types of carpeting or tiles.

Carpet installation and sales help you enhance your home décor. Flooring increases the ambiance in any room. Bold colors, muted tones, and different textures allow you to create the look you want. Visit the retailer first and check out the colors, piles, and padding. These retailers also sell laminate wood, ceramic tiles, and scatter rugs. If you're going for a green home, try natural woods like bamboo. Bamboo grows quickly and is very durable. Environmental-friendly and recycled materials are also good choices. You'll find environmentally-friendly carpets in many stores. There are even companies making colorful woven rugs from recycled plastic bottles that you take outside and spray with the hose to clean. Before ordering the coverings from a retailer, the area of the room interior needs measuring. Most retailers send a custom designer to your home to take measurements and give quotes. At the same time, they can discuss the best choice for surfacing and the pad based on the traffic the room sees. Rooms exposed to muddy boots or shoes will do better with washable surfaces or runners or mats you can wash. Homeowners may be able to lay ceramic tiles, or laminate themselves. Plush, shag, or Berber needs professional installation. Unless you have the right tools, you won't get the surface tight enough to prevent wrinkling. Many wholesalers use contractors who come to your home or office with the materials and tools and do the job right the first time. Durability is key to long-lasting flooring. Shop for the best prices and look at samples to get a feel for the thickness before signing a contract.
