Boarding your cat or kitten can be a great choice for those long vacations or business trips. Many people have their pet groomed at this time, too. Familiarizing yourself with the following terms is a great starting point in selecting a boarder or groomer.

  • Altered – To alter an animal is to spay or neuter it. This is the same as to fix an animal. Some boarding facilities will not allow unaltered cats to stay with them. Most cats and kittens adopted from a shelter will have already been altered.
  • Cattery – A cattery is a facility that specializes in cat breeding or cat sitting.
  • Dander – Dander refers to tiny scales that are released from the skin or fur of an animal. Allergies can arise from contact with pet dander.
  • Free-feed – To free-feed is to allow an animal access to food all day. Cat sitting is a much easier task when the animal is accustomed to free-feeding.
  • Hand-feed – To hand-feed is to limit an animal’s access to food. Food is given at certain times during the day. A dependable cat sitter is needed for hand-fed pets.
  • Intact – An intact cat is one that has not been spayed or neutered. Some kitty resorts will not allow cats who are capable of breeding to stay with them.
  • Molt – Molting is to shed some or all of the coat. Certain cat breeds are more likely to molt than others.
  • Subcutaneous – Subcutaneous refers to something being beneath the skin’s surface. Some boarding facilities will not administer subcutaneous medications such as insulin shots. Pet microchips are subcutaneous and come with most adopted animals.
  • Quick – The quick is a vein that is located in a cat’s claw. Some owners are hesitant to trim nails because of the quick.

These are typically available in communities where the population has more expendable income and are more likely to spare no expense when caring for the health of their animals. Pet shelters and rescue kennels also off these services. They may offer boarding and other services to offset the expense of trying to care and adopt homeless felines. Vet offices and hospitals also can board your pet for an extended stay. They are set up to offer this service just as they keep animals that are ill or recovering from a procedure. Whatever option you choose, make sure you have toured the facility, asked questions, and feel comfortable leaving your breed with the staff.
