When talking to prospective caterers for your special event, you might find that they use terms you haven’t heard before. The list of key terms below will help you communicate with catering and bartending service providers more effectively so that you can choose one that has the foods, drinks, and equipment that you want.
Chafers – You have probably seen chafers before, you just didn’t know that this was the technical name for metal pans with heating elements. Caterers use these pieces of mobile equipment to keep food warm and beverages, such as coffee, warm. Some common chafers models include beverage urns, induction, roll top, and soup chafers.
Panini press – A small kitchen appliance with two grills that are used to heat sandwiches.
Coupette glass – If you want a bartender to serve margaritas at your event, then you might want to ask the catering service whether they have coupette glasses. These glasses have rims that are made to hold salt. That way, the bartending staff can easily apply salt to accompany alcoholic beverages. These glasses are common at Mexican restaurants. Not all caterers, however, have them in stock.
Old-fashioned glass – These short glasses are made to hold 8 to 10 ounces of liquid. That makes them suitable for mixed drinks. You might also hear them called “tumblers.”
Cake stand – If you have never arranged a wedding before, then you might not realize that you need a cake stand. This is exactly what it sounds like: a short stand that restaurants and caterers use to lift cakes off of the table so that it is easier to view and cut.
